Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:13-14

Pressing On

Before the football season begins, whether the team you support is a high school, college or NFL team, the anticipation is always high for your team to be the best they can be. The preseason is also a time of forgetting the things of the past, the disappointments from the prior season, and focusing positively on the new season ahead — thinking about the wins and accomplishments that could be if your team plays well.

In Philippians 3, the Apostle Paul speaks directly about this topic when he challenges us to “forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.” That pressing on he speaks of involves focusing on the new goal that we as Christians have — the goal of serving Christ Jesus, coming to know Him deeply, and ultimately looking forward to spending eternity in Heaven with Him.

Therefore, in Christ, we can forget about what is behind us, and press on with excitement toward what lies ahead not only in our lives, but in eternity!
