“’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’” — Matthew 4:19

One of the coolest moments in baseball is when a prospect gets “the call.” For years, they’ve been grinding in the minor leagues — long bus rides, small stadiums, tiny paychecks. And then one phrase changes everything — “You’re going to the big leagues.”
In recent years, we’ve seen more in-office meetings where the Triple-A manager reveals the big news. Oftentimes, the social media team films the moment to share the player’s reaction, or records the player sharing the news with his family. Those get me every time. Just check out this moment from Seattle Mariners infielder Cole Young.
For these players, that “call” isn’t just about playing baseball — it’s about stepping into a new identity and a whole new stage of life. It’s the realization that their dream is now a reality; all of their hard work and patience has paid off.
It reminds me of what it was like when Jesus called His first disciples. They weren’t on a diamond, but on fishing boats. It was just an ordinary day at work when Jesus showed up and said, “Follow Me.” And with those words, everything changed. They left behind their nets, their livelihoods and the life they’d always known because they’d been called to something greater.
God calls us, too. Sometimes it’s a big, obvious moment — a new job, a new city or a relationship that changes everything. Other times it’s quiet, daily faithfulness — serving in our church, encouraging a friend or showing patience at home. Either way, the call is the same: Follow Jesus. Step into what He’s prepared for you.
And just like a player doesn’t always feel “ready” when the call comes, we may not feel ready when God calls. But His invitation isn’t based on our perfection; it’s based on His power. He equips us as we go.
So the question isn’t whether we’re ready. The question is: Will we say “yes” when He calls?
