Around the Net - Lin and Tebow among Time's 100 most influential, Torii's Taxes

Tim Tebow

New York Jets new quarterback Tim Tebow was named one of the 100 most influential people by Time Magazine, and interestingly enough, New York Knicks point guard, Jeremy Lin, wrote the profile:

Watching Tim Tebow play football, you can observe many things about his character…But it is the qualities that Tim, 24, embodies in his life off the field that truly set him apart. He is unashamed of his convictions and faith, and he lives a life that consistently reflects his values, day in and day out. (Time.com)

Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin was also named to Time’s most influential list. Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education, wrote about Lin:

Jeremy Lin’s story is a great lesson for kids everywhere because it debunks and defangs so many of the prejudices and stereotypes that unfairly hold children back. He’s dispelled the idea that Asian-American guards somehow couldn’t hack it in the NBA…Contrary to what you might read, Jeremy, 23, is no overnight sensation. In fact, he achieved success the old-fashioned way: he earned it. He worked hard and stayed humble. He lives the right way; he plays the right way. (Time.com)

Torii Hunter’s Taxes

Tax day isn’t a fun day for anyone, with all of the complicated forms and deductions and write-offs, but it’s an especially difficult day for pro athletes, who have to pay taxes throughout many different states. Marcia C. Smith from the Orange County Register gets an inside look at Torii Hunter’s ( who was featured in the spring 2012 issue of Sports Spectrum) complicated tax filing process. Here’s an excerpt of the column:

Then there are the state returns for his seven games in Missouri against the Kansas City Royals, three games in Illinois against the Chicago White Sox, four in Massachusetts against the Boston Red Sox, three in Minnesota against his former team, the Twins, six in New York against the Mets and Yankees, six in Maryland against the Baltimore Orioles, three in Ohio against the Cleveland Indians and four in Michigan against the Detroit Tigers.
