Devotional of the Week: Undying Love

200131571-001“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:26

On September 28, 1966, Larry Jaster, lefty pitcher for the Cardinals, prepared to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He had thrown shutouts in four previous starts against them that year.

That afternoon Jaster received a letter from the widow of Grover Cleveland Alexander, Hall of Fame pitcher with the Phillies, Cubs, and Cardinals. She said in 1916, her husband set a major league record by shutting out the Reds five times that season. She told Jaster she lived in LA, would be listening to the game that night, and wished him well.

Jaster then blanked the Dodgers 2-0, thus tying Alexander’s 50-year-old record. History mattered to Mrs. Alexander, and she graciously wrote that supportive letter to Jaster.

Psalm 102:18 says “This will be written for the generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.”  In Acts 7, before he was martyred, Stephen recounted the history of God’s relationship with the Jews.  In Acts 26, Paul related his conversion experience before a pagan king.

Did you know we proclaim history, according to the opening verse, every time we take communion?  We can tell the story quarterly, monthly, weekly, or daily, of what Jesus has done and is doing for us.

Let’s tell the story of Jesus often.  It will benefit us and our descendants.  After all, we are part of “His-story”.
