Receiver D.K. Metcalf says "God makes no mistakes" after NFL combine performance

Every year, players who impress at the NFL combine shoot up draft boards. No one has generated more buzz at the 2019 combine — which concluded Monday — than former Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.

Only two receivers ran a faster time in the 40-yard dash than Metcalf’s 4.33. He benched pressed 225 pounds 27 times, tied for the most of any receiver. Metcalf was also only one of five receivers to post a vertical jump over 40 inches.

On Sunday, he posted a picture of him at the combine on Instagram with the caption, “God makes NO mistakes.”

Metcalf’s father, uncle and grandfather all played in the NFL. His father, Terrance, was drafted in 2002 out of Mississippi, the school D.K. attended so he could follow in his dad’s footsteps. In three seasons at Ole Miss, the younger Metcalf caught 67 passes for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Injuries limited him to 21 games over those three seasons. His freshman season ended when he broke his foot in the second game of the year. In 2017, Metcalf appeared in all 12 games for the Rebels, recording 39 catches, 646 yards and seven touchdowns, all career bests. A neck injury ended Metcalf’s 2018 season after seven games. Before the injury, he had 569 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Thanks in part to his performance at the combine, Metcalf is expected to be a first-round pick in the draft, which starts April 25.

“I look at football as a platform to help other people or to spread the Word of God,” Metcalf told the Daily Mississippian in 2017.
