I’ve spoken many times at a youth camp in a very remote part of the Texas Hill Country. Because this camp was so far away from the city, there was very little light pollution. So at night, the camp was incredibly dark. On some nights, when the moon wasn’t very bright and the clouds covered the stars, I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. Every year when I spoke at this camp, I had to remember to bring a flashlight. The trails and pathways were rocky, so if you didn’t have a flashlight, you could easily fall and trip going back to your cabin or to the chapel.
Right now, as you read this devotional, you aren’t reading this in the dark. But we do live in a spiritually and morally dark world. That is why Jesus says in John 8:12 (above) that He is the light of the world. Since He is God in the flesh, He came to reveal God to the world. He came to open the spiritual eyes of the spiritually blind so they can see and know God.
Like a flashlight provides illumination where there is darkness, Jesus came to illuminate God and His will to us. He came to bring God’s goodness and glory. When you trust Jesus, He brings light into your spiritual and moral darkness. When you walk with Jesus by reading His Word, prayer, and being filled with the Holy Spirit, He leads you in the light.
