Daily Devotional: Thursday, November 28 - Beyond Comprehension

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” — Ephesians 3:20-21

In the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Bob Beamon’s first long jump attempt was so unfathomable that the measuring devices used by officials weren’t capable of measuring his leap. After 15 minutes of discussing what to do, meet officials brought in a hand-held tape measure. The result is still staggering: 29 feet, 2.5 inches, nearly two feet longer than anyone had ever jumped and a record that stood for 23 years.

When Beamon heard how far he had jumped, he was so astonished that he collapsed and wept uncontrollably. He suffered what doctors later called a “cataleptic seizure,” a condition caused by sudden emotional excitement. His jump was dubbed “The Leap of the Century,” and is still second all-time in history (behind Mike Powell’s world record of 29 feet, 4.5 inches, set in 1991).

As unimaginable as Beamon’s jump was then, we see that God can also do things we can’t even comprehend. That’s what the Bible promises in Ephesians 3:20: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…” We just need to ask.
