Paul describes the Lord as “the God of hope” in Romans 15:13. He is the source of our confidence. We can have a joyful expectation for the fulfillment of all that He has promised us. The culmination of this hope for the Christian is summarized in Colossians 1:5 as “the hope stored up for you in heaven.” The ultimate victory for the Christian is realized in the end results.

A common saying in athletics is “tape don’t lie” or “you are your film.” In other words, the results of your play are seen on your game film. How you perform on the film will likely determine your future playing time and the confidence your coaches and teammates have in you. The same is true for God — the Bible is His game film. And because He has acted purely and perfectly in the past, we have confidence in Him for the present and the future.

Our hope in God is increased as we spend time in the Word of God. Romans 15:4 tells us that through “the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Lamentations 3:21 (above) states it this way: “Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope.” The writer was speaking about recalling God’s faithfulness through difficult times. His “tape don’t lie.”

As a person’s hope in God increases to more and more areas of life, that person is increasingly identified as a serious follower of Christ. Our hope and faith in Christ is increased proportionately to the time we spend in God’s Word (Romans 10:17).
