On a regular basis, someone aspiring to be a team chaplain will reach out to me and ask, “How did you become an NBA team chaplain?” Often, they want to be a team chaplain for a professional sports team. My answer is simple, “Be faithful with little and God will entrust you with much more.”
Wanting more, they’ll ask, “What do you mean?”
In college, I started an outreach Bible study for my non-Christian teammates. While in seminary, I served as a prison chaplain. Around that same time, I began to speak at Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddles at local high schools. By God’s grace, I tried to be faithful with every opportunity God provided.
A decade later, I became the college pastor at a large church in San Antonio and was asked to be the team chaplain for the University of Texas at San Antonio’s football team. A few years after my family and I moved to Houston, I was asked to join the chaplain team for the Houston Rockets. When I moved to Des Moines, Iowa, I was asked to be the team chaplain for the Iowa Wolves.
If you are faithful with little, God will entrust you with much more. “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10a). The problem is, so many of us want much more, but we don’t want to be faithful with little.
Be faithful with whatever the Lord has you doing right now, no matter how small, and trust Him to give you more opportunities.
— Ikki Soma, Iowa Wolves chaplain
