Although I’m standing on a 94-foot hardwood court, I feel like a watchman standing guard on a high tower. Eyes observant. Scouring the homeland. Watching for sudden movement. Head on a swivel — looking in front of me, to the sides, above and below, near and far.

My arms extend out like a bear attacking his prey. A teammate needs help. I sprint to help him and then retreat back to my post.

Although I’m weary, there’s no time to rest my eyes. My legs are burning — “Don’t stop moving them.” My breath has intensified — “Breathe through my nose.” Can’t I just put my hands on my knees this one time? “No, don’t show the enemy your weakness.”

The enemy is lurking, prowling, ready to strike at any time, trying to find a weak link in the armor. “Is it me?” I see penetration through a gap in the wall, my feet hurry to investigate. Communicate. I open my mouth, “I got your back!” We hold the line until it’s safe again.

I stand firm, upright, shoulders back, confident and stately. Knees bent, on the balls of my feet, eyes piercing the skies. I am on high alert, but a calmness sweeps over me. My athletic pace is intentional. Ready to move. Ready to strike on command. I must protect what is behind this fortress.

I stand in the gap. No enemy forces may enter. My feet move with determination. My legs ready to leap. My arms ready to shield. My hands signal and the team moves in unison. We are one.

I know my enemy. Steal, kill and destroy are his tactics. He’s tried to break down our defenses before and on occasions he’s succeeded. But not today. Today is different. Today I’m ready.

The opponent, Satan, is scouting your every move. Watching. Waiting. Scheming. Ready to attack.

Christian brothers and sisters, it is imperative to guard your hearts, souls and minds against Satan’s game plan. Stay alert. Stand firm. Be on guard. Protect the goal. Block out. Defend like your life — and others’ — depends on it. And always remember, the best Defender in the universe, Jesus, is on your team.
