“All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.” — Proverbs 7:22-23

Born and raised in England, Paul Riley played professional soccer in the United States. Then, he went on to even greater prominence in the sport through a successful decades-long career coaching in the National Women’s Soccer League and its predecessor leagues.
Yet in 2021, allegations of sexual misconduct perpetrated against his players began to spread. He was fired from his head coaching position, investigated, and in 2023, received a lifetime ban from ever coaching in the NWSL again. Just like that, the career he’d been working hard for decades to build came crashing down in a heap of rubble.
Retelling this story is in no way intended to ridicule Riley further. It is simply a grave warning to us all about the dangers of lust.
God speaks about the sin of lust frequently in Scripture, demonstrating to us the utter devastation that comes when it’s left to roam free in a person’s heart. People’s careers, marriages and even their own bodies are ruined when they become consumed with sexual immorality. These earthly consequences are certainly significant, but they pale in comparison to the eternal consequence of making peace with sin, which is torment in hell forever. Tragically, many professing Christians don’t seem to heed the Bible’s serious warnings about what happens to those who don’t fight lust.
I recently came across a passage that illustrated the dangers of lust. “All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life” (Proverbs 7:22-23). We blindly follow what seems pleasing and attractive, not realizing that what’s at the end of that road is destruction. It’s heartbreaking.
Do the warnings in God’s Word, like this one, land on your heart with the weightiness they should? Is your lust leading you down the path to destruction?
The point of this devotional is not to scare you, but to wake you up. It isn’t too late. The story isn’t over. You’re not too far gone. The grace that’s in God is infinitely bigger than the sin that’s in you, and He is eager to cover you with that grace. He calls us to holiness in all things — including sexual expression — because He is holy and He desires our good.
Confess what your lust has led you to do, repent of it, and believe in the power of God for your redemption. Then, as He has called you to do, fight lust with everything you have through the power of the Holy Spirit. Your very soul is at stake.
