One funny pushback I hear a decent amount with the Family Teams stuff is ‘but won’t that crush the individual? Won’t they be buried and overlooked?’ And while I get what they are asking, I always tend to think that sounds a lot more like fascism to me than living as a team 😂 Dictators crush the individual. But coaches actually create a symbiotic relationship between the team and the individual. The individual flourishes MORE when the team has a grand vision they are pursuing. Steph Curry is a phenomenal individual because he plays in the team framework so beautifully. And the opposite is true too isn’t it? Out of all the teams I’ve played on in my life, the ones where an individual put his needs and desires above the team were the ones that were complete failures and poison. There was then no sacrifice. No love. No mutual submission. No working out of spirit led roles, and dreams, and desires as a unified front. And I think we need to be careful that we don’t put our families on this path, even though for the most part that is the western default mode for family (individual above everything else). And that’s what we are chatting about on today’s podcast episode. I particularly loved Alyssa’s insight about how it starts with the father. That if a family sees the dad pursue his dreams and calling at the EXPENSE of everyone else then why would we think the rest of the family would be a unified team? I was like 😳 when she dropped that bomb. Have you listened yet though? What were your thoughts from today’s episode? What part stood out? #thereallifepodcast #jeffsdadthoughts
