“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what He had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.” — Genesis 21:1-2
The Power of Promises
Before defeating Oklahoma to become the 2009 college football national champions, the Florida Gators lost at home to Mississippi. The defeat only four games into the season put both their conference and national title hopes in jeopardy. After the game, quarterback Tim Tebow delivered what is now known as “The Promise,” a speech that was later engraved on a plaque in Florida’s football facility. Tebow promised they’d learn from the loss and no one would work harder than him. The Gators won their final 10 games, making good on what their quarterback said.
God makes good on His promises too! He told Sarah and Abraham they would have a son even though it seemed physically impossible. Sarah herself even laughed at first, but eventually trusted God. Sure enough, she gave birth to Isaac at the age of 90, just like God promised.
No matter how crazy God’s promises might seem, He will follow through on them. When we find ourselves doubting a promise God has made, we can be encouraged that He has never failed before and never will. Let’s turn our unbelief into belief and trust in Christ!
