When coaches talk about great players, you will often hear them say things like they “see the court.” A great point guard sees the floor and who is about to be open. A great quarterback is able to take in the entire field and make split-second decisions about which teammate is about to break free.
But even elite athletes lose sight of their targets. We are limited in many ways as humans — physically, emotionally and spiritually. Even when we see what’s right in front of us, our own experiences and beliefs often make it hard to understand. Our strength and our intelligence wanes, and our view is limited. But even though we have limits, we serve a God who is limitless. He is the God who sees us always.
In Genesis 16, we read the story of Hagar, a single mother who is banished to the desert and, in her “unseenness,” has an encounter with God that changed everything. “She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me’” (v. 13).
Have you ever really thought about the fact that God has seen you and will see you every single minute of your existence? He saw you in your mother’s womb before you were formed. He saw you as a toddler when you took your first steps. He sees your heart. He sees your hurt and confusion and brokenness. He sees you at your best. He sees you when you are not.
God has more thoughts toward you than you have of your own. His eyes are always on you, watching over you and picking you up when you fall. You are never out of His sight or out of His reach. Even when you may feel unseen, He is with you always.
So be encouraged today. God loves you unconditionally and He will never take His eyes off of you.
