“‘Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty.” — Malachi 3:7

On any team, communication is key. Just ask any quarterback and receiver, pitcher and catcher, golfer and caddie. Author Jon Gordon says, “Where there is a gap in communication, negativity will fill it.”

Some people may not know, but the time between the last communication from God through the prophet Malachi and the sending of the Messiah was 400 years. God was silent for 400 years! Yet, God’s silence does not equal God’s absence. Just as the people anxiously awaited the coming of the Messiah, we can relate because we are waiting for the return of the Messiah. We may find ourselves experiencing His silence just waiting on an answer.

But God’s message in Malachi is relevant to us today: “Return to me, and I will return to you” (Malachi 3:7). While we wait, we should turn to the Lord and His ways: “Remember the law of my servant Moses” (Malachi 4:4).

When God went silent after saying these words, I can only imagine God’s people wondering what they should do. The same was for them as it goes for us: If you don’t know what to do next, just keep doing what God told you last. Keep remembering who God is and what He has done. Write the memories down and share with others. Remembering what God did yesterday will help us get through today!
