“Surrender” to a professional athlete is like a curse word. It has been ingrained to never give up regardless of the circumstances. But when it comes to our relationship with the Lord, nothing could be further from the truth. You remember the words of Jesus in Mark 8:34? “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
The Lord was demanding total commitment from those listening — He was calling for full surrender! Acknowledging Jesus as your Savior is one thing; submitting to Him as Lord over your life is next level. It requires pursuing a lifestyle of self-denial, putting the Lord and His interests as first priority in how you view your life, make your choices, and manage your relationships. This is how strong, productive disciples are made.
I have often said in my pastoral ministry that I can’t make you a better husband or a better father or a better friend. But I can help you become a better disciple of Christ, and better disciples become better friends, husbands and fathers.
If you want to have a closer walk with the Lord, then it’s time to surrender to the Word of God and the will of God. It’s time to get in step with His Spirit that indwells every believer. “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). It’s time to surrender to Christ in you. It’s time to give it up!
