“As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.” — Ecclesiastes 10:1

David was the youngest of eight sons and was herding sheep when God divinely anointed him as the next king of Israel. While still a young boy, he demonstrated superior faith and courage when he single-handedly defeated Goliath on the battlefield. As he grew older, he proved to be a great soldier, a great leader and a great king.

In addition, David was good-looking and gifted as a poet (he wrote most of the psalms). He had a heart to please the Lord, which is why Scripture refers to him as “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14).

David’s successes and blessings multiplied. He was blessed and highly favored. The Lord was with him, and he led the Israelites to victories in battle after battle. Yet when everything seemed to be going well, King David let his guard down. Against the advice of Scripture, David took on many concubines and wives. Deuteronomy 17:17a warned, “He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray.”

That’s exactly what happened. David became indifferent to the things of God, which led him to become disobedient (2 Samuel 11:1-3). David eventually repented after he was convicted by the prophet Nathan, but his family continued to live in disobedience and contempt with each other (2 Samuel 13). One of David’s own sons even tried to assassinate him and take the throne.

Remember, sin has consequences even for the righteous!
