“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” — James 5:16

I once officiated the wedding of an NBA player and his fiancée in downtown Dallas. The ceremony had private security to keep the paparazzi out. The wedding program asked guests not to ask other guests for selfies or autographs. I’d never seen that in a wedding program before. No expense was spared on the rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony or reception. But this wasn’t the most lavish wedding I’ve ever officiated.

I once did a ceremony that made that NBA player’s wedding seem like a backyard cookout. Their rehearsal dinner was fancier than most wedding reception dinners. Like the NBA player’s wedding, no expense was spared. Sadly, this other marriage didn’t even last one year.

What happened? How could a couple spend so much money on a wedding and then get divorced a few months later? After their wedding, the couple was combining all of their finances and it was discovered that the husband had racked up online sports gambling debts. Initially, he lied to his wife to try and cover his tracks. His wife lost trust in him, kicked him out of the house, and a few months later, they got divorced.

So I write this devotion in all seriousness: If you try to hide your sins and struggles, they’ll eventually be revealed. Confess your sins to God and to one another (James 5:16, above). Don’t try to keep your sins hidden and in the dark.

Is there a hidden sin or struggle you need to confess to someone you trust?
