“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” — 1 Timothy 6:12

American actor and comedian Rodney Dangerfield was known for his one-liners. One of the most famous: “I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out.” To casual spectators of the game, this might be the way hockey comes across — all brutality and no finesse. While this couldn’t be further from the truth, every once in a while a good ol’ donnybrook (hockey slang for “fight”) takes place and sets the tone for the rest of the game.
Fighting may not be pretty, but it’s an important part of hockey culture and differentiates the sport from all others. And whether or not you have experience dropping the gloves yourself, the imagery of a fight is something everyone can visualize.
That being so, it’s no surprise the apostle Paul referenced fighting when writing to Timothy about how to best keep his faith intact. Paul told Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith.” You might ask, “Why would he encourage Timothy to fight?” Paul knew better than most just how tough living a life of following Jesus can be. The desire to go back to your old habits, the pull from the world, and the schemes of the devil are all against you living out our faith.
In order to stand strong, you might need to plant your feet and swing at temptations coming your way. Not physically, of course, but spiritually a full-blown donnybrook might break out in your life as you fight for your faith.
Don’t back down, stand your ground, and hold on to the eternal life secured through Jesus!
