“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’ ‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence …” — Joshua 5:13-14

I was about to do chapel for a college football team and their coach said to me, “If we win tomorrow, we’ll have you back.” He was joking, but some coaches and players see pregame chapel as their good luck charm to get God on their side. If they win or play well, that means God was on their side. But if they lose, don’t play well, or get injured, that means God must not have been on their side.
Even in the NBA, going to chapel is a part of the pregame ritual for some players — it’s their attempt to get God on their side. They want Him on their side so they play well, don’t get injured, or get to sign a multimillion-dollar contract.
I frequently remind the players in chapel that God doesn’t take sides. We take His side. Unlike us, God doesn’t have a favorite college or professional team or player. During the World Cup or Olympics, He doesn’t take the side of any nation’s team. He doesn’t take sides.
In Joshua 5:13-15, as Israel is about to enter the Promised Land, an angel appears to Joshua, who asks the angel, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” The angel replies that he is on neither side, as he is the commander of the army of the Lord. What the angel is saying is that God doesn’t take sides, but that we have to side with Him.
So today, take God’s side. Get right behind Him.
