One of the biggest offseason stories to headline the basketball world was nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard returning to the Portland Trail Blazers after a brief stint with the Milwaukee Bucks. In that deal, Lillard was given a three-year, $42 million dollar contract. It was a surprise move, especially to sign a 35-year-old guard who recently tore his Achilles. Many fans and those in the media were confused by the Trail Blazers’ decision, especially for such a high price, feeling it wasn’t worth the benefits.

It seems pretty obvious that Portland spent the money it did because it wanted Dame back home and was willing to do whatever it took to do so, even if it meant sacrificing a lot. As I think about this situation, it feels rather familiar.

God did the same thing for His people on the highest scale. We were once with God, but sin put a gap between us and Him. It remained that way until He sent Jesus Christ, His one and only Son, who was perfect, to commit the ultimate sacrifice through crucifixion, which saved all those who believe in Him.

Just like the decision to bring back Lillard, it makes no logical sense to spend so much to get back broken people. But God did that because He loves us so much. John 3:16, maybe the most famous verse in the Bible, perfectly exemplifies this truth: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God’s love for us surpasses all understanding. We sin day after day. We choose to do what we want rather than what He wants for us. We constantly turn our back to Him and yet He still chases after us. Because in the end, He wants us to come home.
