“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” — Hebrews 12:1b

If you know you’re running one mile, you can pace yourself. You know how to endure the pain because the finish line is always within reach. But when life feels more like an ultra marathon — no clear finish line, no idea when the struggle will end — that’s a different kind of test altogether.

Where I live, there’s an ultra marathon that lasts for days. Runners push their bodies to the brink, sometimes running until they physically can’t go any farther. It’s not just about speed or even strength; it’s about endurance. The ones who make it learn to manage the long middle. They rest when they can, refuel often, listen to their bodies, and trust that forward is still forward, even if it’s slow.

Life often feels like that kind of race. There are seasons when the waiting stretches on with no end in sight: a job that won’t come through, a prayer that feels unanswered, a healing that hasn’t arrived. It’s easy to wonder if God sees how tired we are.

But Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” We may not see the finish line, but we can see the One who has already finished His race. Jesus endured His own marathon of suffering for the joy set before Him — the joy of redeeming us.

In long races, endurance depends on fuel. The same is true for our souls. If we try to run on our own strength, we’ll burn out fast. But when we rest in God’s presence, when we refuel through prayer, Scripture, worship and community, He gives us what we need for the next mile, even when we don’t know how many are left.

It is much easier said than done. Waiting, enduring trial after trial, not receiving answers — each day can feel like a month, and each month can feel like a year. It is truly exhausting in every possible way.

You might not see the end right now. But God does. Even when that truth is hard to grasp or even believe, it’s still true. And He’s not just waiting at the finish line, He’s running beside you, providing strength for every weary step.
