I had a coach once who changed the way I saw everything. Not because of what he taught me about baseball, but because of who I became by being around him. We’d meet early before practice, not for extra drills or intense training sessions, but just to talk. About life. About faith. About what was going on in my head and heart. Sometimes we’d work. Sometimes we’d just sit.
I didn’t realize what was happening at first, but over time, something shifted. The way I approached the game changed. The way I handled pressure changed. The way I saw myself changed. I wasn’t trying to change; I was just spending time with someone who saw things differently than I did. And by being near him, his perspective started to become mine.
That’s how transformation actually works.
In Titus 1:4 (ESV), the apostle Paul calls Titus “my true child in a common faith.” Titus became like Paul not by reading Paul’s instruction manual. He became like Paul by being with Paul. By watching him. By learning from him. By staying close.
That’s how disciples were made in the ancient world. You didn’t just study under a teacher — you did life with them. You walked where they walked. You ate what they ate. You absorbed their way of seeing the world. And over time, you started to look like them.
My coach didn’t transform me by giving me a list of things to fix. He transformed me by being present. By showing me what it looked like to live differently. By inviting me into his rhythm of life.
Jesus works the same way. How close to Christ are you?
