As I grew up in the greatest decade known to mankind, the 1980s, the “Wide World of Sports” was a Saturday staple. It helped make household names of sports figures like Evel Knievel, Muhammad Ali and Nadia Comaneci.

One of the things that made the show so well-known was the iconic opening narration by host Jim McKay. Channel your inner radio voice and hear Jim say, “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport … the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” If you’ve played sports for any amount of time, you’ve experienced the joy of winning and the agony of defeat more times than you want to recount.

Defeat. David knew that term simply because he lived it. He penned Psalm 3 while exiled from Jerusalem because his son, Absalom, had stolen his kingdom. His enemies were against him, and he was constantly on the run, often feeling defeat more than success.

But during that time, he found peace because he rested in the Lord. Psalm 3:3 reminds us that the Lord is “the One who lifts my head high.” At night, lying in the back of a cave after running all day, the Lord would gently remind David, “I’ve got this!”

As you face anything in your life, allow the Lord to encourage your soul like David did. The Lord had his back, and He has yours as well!
