Just 63 seconds into an NBA matchup between the Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs on April 3, 2019, then-Spurs coach Gregg Popovich received two technical fouls and was ejected for the remainder of the game. The Spurs had to play essentially the entirety of the contest without their Naismith Hall of Fame head coach, and as one might have suspected, they were blown out, 113-85.
Without Popovich, San Antonio looked listless and hesitant. Their defense appeared disorganized and their offense sputtered. Sure, an assistant coach stepped up to assume the role of a head coach for the evening, but without Popovich’s voice of guidance to which his team had grown accustomed, they were lost.
The same was true of the time in Israel’s history known as the Judges Period. This period spanned roughly 400 years, between the death of Joshua and the institution of Saul as the first king of Israel, and it was characterized by increasing chaos, disobedience and depravity. The Book of Judges detailing the Judges Period repeats a familiar refrain; indeed, it’s the book’s final sentence:
“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” — Judges 21:25
The message is clear: Israel needed a Godly king, a servant leader who would curtail idolatry and wickedness and redirect the nation toward devoted obedience to God. After centuries of Israel’s cycle of failure, followed each time by God’s faithful deliverance, the need for a king was obvious. Without one, everyone followed their own self-centered preferences, their own assumptions of what they thought best. Disaster was the result.
Israel soon did get a king “after God’s own heart” in the person of David, whose reign ushered in a time of peace and prosperity for the nation. But even David fell into heinous sin. Israel needed someone better, to deliver them eternally. To bring about perfect peace. Israel needed a perfect king — Jesus Christ Himself.
Fully God and fully man, Jesus took the sins of His people upon Himself and paid for them with His very life. He willingly submitted to death, sacrificing Himself for those He loved. And then He rose again, defeating sin and death for good. Now, He sits at the right hand of the Father, steadfastly guiding His people out of darkness and into His glorious light.
So, if you feel chaotic, like you’re floating aimlessly through life, look to Jesus. Make Him your King. He is with you, He loves you, and He will make straight your paths.
