After Jesus miraculously fed the crowd of 5,000 men in Matthew 14, He sent the disciples away in a boat to cross the lake while He retreated to the hills alone to pray. As they were crossing the lake, a storm hit with strong winds and waves. Then, Jesus approached the disciples by walking on the water.

After moments of fear and disbelief, Peter too walked on the water out to Jesus. But as Peter began to fear the storm, he began to sink. Jesus reached out and grabbed him saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (v. 31). When they climbed back into the boat, the storm calmed, and the disciples exclaimed, “Truly you are the Son of God” (v. 33).

In allowing this storm to happen, Jesus revealed Himself in a new way. As He walked on water, He not only did what was humanly impossible, but He also fulfilled prophecies revealing who He truly was — proving He was the true Son of God. The only way to see Jesus in this way was to go through the storm.

Although rarely wanted — and often unexpected — storms can be used to remind us that God works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28, above). In athletics, we see storms come in the form of injury, unexpected news, cuts from a team, and so much more.

If you find yourself in one right now, how might God be trying to reveal Himself to you?
