Every now and then, after our team chapel is done, players will hang out to talk. Sometimes they have questions about the chapel message. Sometimes they need prayer. And sometimes they just want to be vulnerable.

When I was the team chaplain for the Houston Rockets, a few days after Christmas, one of the biggest stars in the NBA stayed after chapel was over. I asked him how his Christmas was. “We played on Christmas day and after the game was over, I went back to my hotel room. I spent Christmas alone in my room,” he replied with a gloomy, sad tone. “Your family didn’t come visit you?” I asked. “Nope. Since we played on Christmas and had a quick turnaround, they didn’t come visit me,” he replied with continued gloom.

But before I could encourage him, his countenance changed and he joyfully said, “But you know what? I’m thankful that I get to play professional basketball. I get to do what so many want to do.”

For many of us, we believe that famous, professional, wealthy athletes don’t experience what we experience. Like us, however, they experience loneliness. Also like us, they can give thanks.

God’s will for us is not to give thanks for every circumstance, such as loneliness or injury, but to give thanks in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18, above). Though he missed being with his family on Christmas day, this NBA player found something to be thankful for.

What are you thankful for today?

— Ikki Soma, Iowa Wolves chaplain
