By Sports Spectrum Jul 1, 2015Crystal Palace led to FA Cup final by strong group of believers: ‘See what the Lord has done’
By Joshua Doering May 15, 2025Crystal Palace have never won a major trophy in their 120-year history. That could change Saturday when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at iconic Wembley Stadium in London.
There are two knockout cup competitions that teams from the various levels of the English soccer pyramid enter every season: the League Cup and the FA Cup. Saturday will be just the third time Palace have played for either of them. They also reached the FA Cup final in 1990 and 2016, losing to Manchester United in heartbreaking fashion both times.

Led by a promising group of young players, the South London club and its supporters are hoping the third time will be the charm. An incredible run under newly appointed manager Oliver Glasner to close last season left many feeling optimistic about the possibility of 2024-25 being the best campaign in club history.
Instead, Palace won just one of their first 13 Premier League games. They have been dramatically improved since the calendar turned to 2025 and are up to 12th in the league table with two games remaining in the Premier League season.
But they’ve won their FA Cup matches. And at the heart of Palace’s run to the final are a group of players bonded by their strong faith in God. Headlined by England internationals Marc Guéhi and Eberechi Eze, they are outspoken about their faith in interviews and on social media.
Born in the Ivory Coast, Guéhi is a product of the Chelsea youth academy but never made a first-team appearance for the club. He joined Palace in 2021 following two loan spells at Swansea City and quickly established himself as one of the top young center backs in the Premier League.

He made his debut with the England men’s national team in March 2022 and was one of the stars of England’s runner-up showing at the 2024 European Championships, playing every minute of the tournament other than the quarterfinal, which he missed through suspension after picking up two yellow cards.
The son of a minister and the team captain for every round of the FA Cup, Guéhi has always made church an important part of his life.
“I’ve grown up loving God and when I have had the chance I still go to church with my family, and my faith is definitely a big part of my life,” he said in 2021. “Faith is everything that I’m involved with, really; even in football, where I’m trying to be a role model and show God’s graciousness and God’s glory through my life.”
Eze is the focal point of Palace’s attack and leads the team with eight assists across all competitions. He is also tied for second on the team with seven goals and has scored three times in four FA Cup appearances.
The 26-year-old opened the scoring in Palace’s 3-0 semifinal victory over Aston Villa with a strike from outside the box.

Like Guéhi, Eze — who featured three times for England at Euro 2024 — was introduced to the Lord at an early age.
“I’ve grown up in a Christian household, regularly going to church,” he told The Athletic in 2023. “For me, it’s hugely important, simply because of the peace of mind it gives me. It allows me to regulate myself and put things into perspective.
“Football can get super intense and you can get caught up in it all, but my faith allows me to realign my focus and know there’s something greater and that there’s a deeper purpose as to why I’m in the position I’m in.”
Guéhi and Eze aren’t the only ones at Palace playing for God’s glory either. Guéhi’s partner in central defense, Maxence Lacroix, is also strong in his faith.
Acquired from German club Wolfsburg prior to this season, Lacroix has played the fifth-most minutes on the team across all competitions. He regularly uses Bible verses as captions for his Instagram posts and praised God in a post after Palace reached the final.
“SEE WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE!” he wrote. “Incredible atmosphere today from our fans, South London and Proud. Glory To Jesus-Christ”
All three players will be steadied by their faith as they prepare to play one of the biggest games of their careers. Saturday’s final kicks off at 11:30 a.m. ET. Palace will finish their season by hosting Wolves on May 20 and visiting EPL champions Liverpool on May 25.

Newly crowned Premier League champion Cody Gakpo declares ‘I belong to Jesus’
By Joshua Doering Apr 29, 2025Liverpool’s men’s team entered the 2024-25 season with plenty of question marks. Legendary manager Jurgen Klopp was gone, replaced by Arne Slot. The team was coming off a third-place finish and signed just one player in the summer transfer window.
Three crucial players — Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk — were impending free agents. The English Premier League title race was framed as a battle between last season’s top two finishers: Arsenal and Manchester City.

But Liverpool won their first three games by a combined score of 7-0 and never slowed down. They lost just once in their first 30 league games and built a double-digit lead at the top of the table. By early April, it was a question of when — not if — they would be crowned champions of England.
Needing just a draw at home against Tottenham on Sunday, Liverpool turned the match into a full-fledged celebration as they scored five unanswered goals to win 5-1 and secure the title with four games to spare. The title is Liverpool’s 20th, tying them with Manchester United for the most all time.
“It’s amazing,” striker Cody Gakpo said after the game. “We worked really hard this year. [We have had] special moments … to get this is amazing.”
The Dutch international, who turns 26 on May 7, contributed Liverpool’s third goal Sunday. To celebrate, he took off his jersey to reveal a shirt that read, “I belong to Jesus.”

It was a public declaration of the faith that has fueled Gakpo throughout his career and a continuation of the strong legacy of faith at the club through people like Klopp, former striker Roberto Firmino and current goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Gakpo also took to social media to celebrate his first Premier League title and give glory to God.
“Childhood dream fulfilled — Premier League champions 24/25,” he wrote on Instagram. “So proud of everyone on the team and everything we’ve achieved. Reds, your love and support made it even more special — can’t thank y’all enough. God guided every step of this journey, and I’m beyond grateful. We did this together.”
In his second full season at the club, Gakpo’s 17 goals and 22 goal involvements across all competitions rank second on the team. He surpassed his Premier League goal total from last season on Sunday despite playing 22 fewer minutes.
Gakpo rose through the ranks at Dutch power PSV and attracted interest from two Premier League clubs — Leeds United and Southampton — in the Summer 2022 transfer window following a 12-goal, 12-assist season. He made his decision by surrendering it to the Lord. PSV played Volendam on the day the transfer window closed. Gakpo decided if he scored once, he would move to Southampton. If he scored twice, he would go to Leeds. He would stay at PSV if he got a hat trick.
Gakpo scored twice in the first half. He found the back of the net again early in the second half, but it took a heavy deflection, so it was unclear if he’d be given credit for the goal. When he was substituted, it appeared he was headed to Leeds. But that last goal was ultimately awarded to him, so he stayed at PSV.
He moved to Liverpool in the next transfer window after scoring in all three group-stage games at the 2022 World Cup, held in November and December.
“I could feel God’s presence as well because it was just in His hands, and it happened so quick,” he told ESPN in 2024 about leaving PSV. “I was so calm, and I was not really stressed about those things. So that was for me also a sign like it’s a God move.”
Whether it is leading Bible studies, incorporating it into celebrations, or posts on social media, Gakpo boldly lives out his faith and publicly discusses what it means to him.
“Faith gives me peace,” he told Premier Christianity in 2023. “And strength when I need it. I often read the Bible before I go to sleep. It is a kind of love letter that tells us how we should treat each other.”
Having been eliminated from the three cup competitions (Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League) they were also competing in, Liverpool will take the field four more times before their season ends. Up next is a visit to Chelsea on Sunday. They will finish by hosting Crystal Palace on May 25.
