“He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.” Romans 4:20-21
This story is from the book, “Diz”, pp 107-109, by Robert Gregory, Penguin Books, 1992.
On July 11, 1933, future Hall of Fame Cardinal pitcher Dizzy Dean was pitching against the Giants in a home game. Earlier that day, Diz had gone to a children’s hospital. As the visit ended, the kids began a chant, “Strike out Terry! Strike out Terry!” referring to future Hall of Fame first baseman Bill Terry. Diz said, “I’ll do it, with the bases loaded, if I can!”
In the ninth inning, the Cards were ahead 2-1 with one out, two runners on base, and Terry (whom Diz had NOT struck out yet) on deck. Diz intentionally walked Hughie Critz to load the bases and bring Terry up. Then Diz, never short on confidence, went up to Terry and said, “I hate to do this Bill, but I promised the kids in the hospital I’d strike you out with the bases loaded, and that’s what I’m gonna do.”
Three pitches later, he kept his promise, and another batter later, he won the game.
Did Diz keep all his promises in life? No. Does God keep all His? Yes. He said He wouldn’t flood the entire earth again, and He hasn’t. He said the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, and He was. He said the Messiah would be crucified, buried, and resurrect the third day, and He did. He has promised He has good plans for you. Believe Him. Follow Him. He always keeps His promises.
