“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Hebrews 13:5
New York Yankees Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel was forced into retirement on Oct. 18, 1960, just after the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates and just more than two months after he turned 70 years old.
The strange thing was that Stengel was highly successful. He had led the Yankees to 10 American League pennants in the previous 12 years and seven World Series during that span. Age and differences of opinion with management were reasons mentioned why the Yankees did away with such a successful manager.
It’s comforting to know that God doesn’t toss us aside because of our age or when we disappoint Him. As the writer of Hebrews reminds us, God will never leave us or forsake us. It’s a promise.
