“For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heavens, to establish a weight for the wind and apportion the waters by measure.” Job 28:24-25
Wrigley Field (so named in 1927) has been the home of the Chicago Cubs since 1916. Situated near Lake Michigan, it is legendary for its wind currents. Many a slugger has seen a home run turn into a routine fly ball, and many a utility player has seen a routine fly ball turn into a home run, depending on the direction of the wind.
Candlestick Park, former home of the San Francisco Giants, was subject to gusts of wind from the nearby bay. Once, pitcher Stu Miller was blown off balance on the mound while in mid-delivery…and was charged with a balk!
Did you know that the wind actually has weight? I did not, until I read about it in a commentary that mentioned the above verse. This was not affirmed scientifically until about 300 years ago. My own shorthand reaction to it was, “Whodathunkit?!?”
Jesus used the wind as an analogy for the Holy Spirit in John 3 while talking to Nicodemus. The wind is heard, is hard to predict, and goes where it will. I’m sure these concepts give the enemy a great deal of trouble.
What a humbling and awesome privilege to be sealed by the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13) and be filled with Him as well (Ephesians 5:18).
May we be willing vessels to hear and respond to the Spirit. What He does carries a lot of weight.
