Daily Devotional: Wednesday, August 9 - God's Center-Mid

“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” — Luke 1:17

Only God would choose a barren mother and an elderly father to bring forth one of the greatest prophets of all time. But why did He choose Zechariah and Elizabeth, and at that moment in time? Because the vessel that would carry the Savior was finally of age and ready to be used. The time of Jesus’ arrival was nearing, but according to the prophecy in Isaiah 40:3, there had to be a forerunner. Now enters John the Baptist.

As I read about John the Baptist, it became more and more evident that he held one of the most significant positions in all of Scripture. He would be the opening act for God’s greatest story, positioning the One for greatness by becoming Heaven’s greatest usher.

Have you ever known that you would be the one to create, position and place others, but that the work you put forth would not be just for you but rather for those who would follow you? John the Baptist was dripping with prophecy, infused with the spirit and power of Elijah, filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb — all “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Luke 1:17). Do you see that? He was born to make people ready for the Lord. I want that!

I want to position people, prepare their hearts, and help them be ready for the coming King. John the Baptist is essentially Heaven’s greatest center midfielder. The role of a real center-mid in soccer is to assist you, recognize when you are open, prepare the atmosphere, and ultimately help you get in a position to finish.

Are you ready to be God’s forerunner, preparing others for the coming King?
