You may not recognize her name, but I bet you know her phrase. Anne Herbert scribbled down a slogan on a placemat in 1982 that has taken on a life of its own. She published a book and started a foundation, Facebook page and blog based on it. Movies have been inspired by it.

The phrase? “Practice random acts of kindness.” These acts of goodwill serve to encourage others, especially random strangers. It is about being friendly, generous or considerate, and can be planned or spontaneous. These acts result in making people happy.

Perhaps you have heard stories or have been the recipient of a random act of kindness. A person at a drive-through pays for the order of the car behind them, or someone gives up a seat for another. The list is endless.

Though Anne scribbled down that phrase, God has been doing acts of kindness throughout the ages. The difference? God’s acts of kindness are purposeful, not random. Through His kindness, Jesus healed the sick, fed the hungry, and raised the dead. His kindness made it possible for us to enter into His family.

God requires that we, too, practice kindness. We are to be clothed in kindness and be kind to one another. The fruit of God’s spirit of kindness resides in us and provides the power for us to show kindness to others. Doing so brings glory to God.

I encourage you to reflect on how you might practice kindness today. What is one act of kindness you can purposefully do today?
