“Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, ‘Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.'” — 1 Samuel 19:4

President Harry S. Truman once said, “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.”

We live in a selfie world. We do tend to care who gets the credit — me. The problem with this mentality is we were created by God to be a part of a team.

One of my favorite teammate stories in the Bible is that of David and Jonathan. David was chosen by God to be the next king, even though Jonathan was the son of the current king. After David plays the harp to comfort the king, kills Goliath, and moves into the palace, you could understand if Jonathan was jealous and wanted to get rid of him. Instead, Jonathan honored David (1 Samuel 18:4), and even helped save his life (1 Samuel 19:1-4).

Because Jonathan was a follower of God, his eyes were opened to the calling on David’s life and his own. Jonathan was created to come alongside David and help him be great. He didn’t reject or resent his role, but embraced it because he knew God’s calling on one’s life is unique to them.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be a part of the body of Christ — we’re part of the team. My challenge: Come alongside someone else to help them be great, even if that means you never get the credit. Because if you do it right, God will.
