Daily Devotional: Tuesday, October 15 - Redeemed

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” — 1 Peter 1:18-19

Former English soccer player David Beckham received a red card and was removed from a 1998 World Cup game. England went on to lose the game, eliminating it from the competition. Fans and media had an intense reaction speaking ill of and slandering Beckham. Years later, he redeemed himself (atoned for his error) by being named captain of the English team and scoring a key goal that helped to qualify England for the next World Cup.

Spiritually speaking, we all need to experience redemption. As believers in Christ, we have already been redeemed, but not by our efforts. Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:18-19 (above) that we were redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. Jesus gave His life as a payment for our disobedience to God. Jesus chose to set aside His divine nature, take on the qualities of a servant, and come to earth as a human to pay the penalty we deserved to pay.

Jesus made it possible for us to be in a relationship with God. How might we respond to this? As we begin to truly understand the cost and significance of our redemption, we’ll desire to live our lives in a manner that is pleasing to God and brings Him glory.

So whether practicing, competing, supporting those in the competition, interacting with fans, or in all that you do or say, remember your redemption is made possible through Christ. Play for His glory alone.
