Daily Devotional: Wednesday, March 26 – Light The Lamp

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. … In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:14, 16

One of the most iconic and unique parts of hockey is the way goals are signaled. In 1917, the NHL replaced the umpires, who would stand in the middle of the action, with a lamp behind each net. The goal lamp was a safer alternative, allowing judges to move to booths outside the boards and away from the threats of visiting players.

What makes lighting the lamp so significant in hockey is the fact that absolutely no one can deny seeing it. When it goes off, everyone is made fully aware a goal was scored.

And when it comes to our faith, it should be no different. Absolutely no one should be able to deny seeing the light we carry as followers of Jesus. Being the light in the darkness of our world is not for the faint of heart but, like a lamp signaling a goal, it’s necessary.

Jesus speaks to this reality in Matthew 5:14 and 16 when He says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. … In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

There are people all around us who need to know they no longer need to live in darkness. So light the lamp, and shine the goodness of God for all to see!
