“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” — Matthew 2:11

December is one of the busiest months of the NBA season. When many other people are shopping or going to holiday parties, basketball coaches, staff and players are often on an airplane to go to the next game in a faraway city. Perhaps they read a few Bible verses on the plane or attend a pregame chapel service, but it’s not easy to plan personal worship time amid the busyness. So players often miss Christmas Eve services and other family time due to preparing for games.
Similar to athletes, we too can struggle to make time to give proper attention to God during the busy holiday season. So it’s good to look for inspiration from the Magi who dropped everything for a period of time to travel and spend time with baby Jesus.
Long ago, the prophet Isaiah saw a vision of these weary travelers. In poetic language, we read a description of the trek across a large area to see the first coming of Christ into the world. Christ’s arrival brought hope, peace, joy and love to everyone who came near the Savior. The prophet even showed beforehand how the glorious light of Christ would pierce the darkness. “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn” (Isaiah 60:1-3).
When the wise men arrived in Jerusalem, they stopped and asked King Herod where the Messiah was supposed to be born. After Herod gathered the religious leaders, they quoted from the Old Testament about the place of Christ’s birth. So the wise men continued their travels to Bethlehem.
Once there, the wise men showed us the proper way to approach Jesus in reverence and worship. They bowed before Him and recognized Him as God in the flesh. “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).
As we think about this true story and the Christmas holiday we just experienced, does it stir our hearts and minds to pause and reflect on the greatness of the Christ Child? Hopefully we take time to bow before Jesus regularly and pray with wonder and amazement at the Lord’s mercy and grace poured out for us daily. We show our appreciation to God when we give gifts back to our God who loves us with an everlasting love. God the Father loves us so much that He sent the Son into the world to be our Savior.
When we take time to cherish Christ, this Christmas season is more meaningful and we increase our joy.
