“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” — 1 Timothy 4:7-8
Something to Train For
I cannot even begin to imagine how many hours, days, weeks and months I have put into my physical training. I am an athlete — always have been and, on some level, always will be.
Yet when I finished my college eligibility, I slacked in my training. I have become more of a “recreational” athlete, and the motivation I had to devote to my training is not what it used to be. It is so much easier to train when you have something to train for — something you MUST train for. Yes, I should work out and eat healthy to live a healthy life, but that is different from working out and eating healthy because the national meet is right around the corner.
But godliness. That is motivation worth training for. There is a meet, a game, a competition ahead — a time to be tested. We don’t know when, we don’t know where, we just know it is coming. We cannot slack off in our training. We cannot be caught off guard. We’ve got to be ready to go when the Lord calls and we cannot be “out of shape.”
Will you devote as much time to your spiritual training as you do your physical training?
