It’s hard to imagine now, but there used to be a wall that divided Berlin, the capital of Germany. In 1961, a wall was built to divide East Berlin from West Berlin, but on Nov. 9, 1989, the dividing wall came tumbling down. There were no longer two Berlins, but now just one Berlin.
In Ephesians 2:14-15, we find that Jesus broke down the dividing wall between Jews and non-Jews. He did this so there wouldn’t be a Jewish church and a non-Jewish church, but just the Church; so the two would be reconciled into one new family. Paul calls this blueprint for a united Church “one new humanity.” Not Judaism 2.0, but a brand-new people — Church 1.0. All Christians are citizens of the same Kingdom and members of the same family. There is no dividing wall.
So then, why are churches divided? Because churches have submitted to a divided society rather than to a divine Savior. In segregated communities, sadly, we find segregated churches. We’ve built dividing walls.
But if God is our Father, Jesus is our King and the Holy Spirit is our Teacher, we should be united members of God’s family. What divides our world should not divide us. Jesus broke down the wall that divided Jews from non-Jews so that His vision for a united Church could be fulfilled.
