“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver and gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” — 1 Peter 1:18-19

Don’t Chase the Temporary

Part of being a coach in the sports world today is the almost constant risk of losing your job. Six of the NFL’s 32 teams fired their head coaches in the days after the 2018 regular season ended, and two more, Hue Jackson and Mike McCarthy, had already been let go. The exact same thing happens in just about every sport at the end of every season. With only a few exceptions, job security doesn’t really exist anymore for coaches.

Just like the profession of coaching, nearly everything in our lives is temporary. All the money we make and material objects we buy stay here when we pass away. If we spend our time and energy chasing after a certain title or society’s approval, we will almost always end up being disappointed. Even if we achieve our goal, it can be taken away from us at any second.

The hope we have in Christ is the only thing we can count on every moment of every day.

If we put our worth in anything other than what God says about us — that we are all dearly loved and designed for a unique purpose — we allow circumstances to determine our value. While everything else can come and go, God’s love does not. When we remember that, we can continue to find joy and peace even in the darkest parts of our lives. Trusting in Jesus is the only thing that will never let you down!
