When I was coaching, I always felt a tug on my character to do it any way but God’s way. My quiet demeanor and level temper would sometimes infuriate those around me. Now, don’t mistake my meekness for weakness. I was passionate on the sideline but I always knew my boundaries.

Many people would tell me, “You can’t love on them and be stern. You can’t be concerned with everything about them and stay objective.” I even had parents tell me I should cuss my players out to get them to respond when they weren’t playing well. But I was determined to hold onto my sideline witness and remember the God-ordained mission I had on that campus.

In Daniel 3:16-18, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego also made a bold statement in and about their God. They replied to the culture of the day by saying, “We will not bow down to you or your idols. We are going to continue to do things God’s way.” When pressured by the king to bow down or else, they declared, “The God we serve is able to deliver us.”

For 11 years on the sideline, I made a commitment to not bow down to the culture, the expectations of others, or to anything set up against the things of God. Like those three men, I made bold statements with my life because I knew the God I served was able. He is able to sustain me, protect me and keep me from falling.

What bold declarations will you make with your life this year?
