“But the Lord said to Gideon, ‘There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, “This one shall go with you,” he shall go; but if I say, “This one shall not go with you,” he shall not go.'” — Judges 7:4

In Judges 7, God determined which men would be best to follow Gideon into battle by watching them drink water from a spring. Who knew that lapping water like a dog would be what it takes to reveal a fighting spirit? But like any tryout for a sports team, God evaluated them through several exercises before revealing His final team.
When I think of the story of Gideon, I think about the first year I ever coached. I wasn’t afraid of the X’s and O’s, the in-game adjustments or the coaching itself, but I was terrified of choosing the wrong players.
I soon learned the criteria needed to put a squad together, and with a list in front me, I began the process of eliminating some while keeping others. I prayed about these three things: Who needs the program, who does the program need, and who has potential? As I prayed, I waited and listened for God’s confirmation on who to choose. Like Gideon, I had to lean on the Spirit of God and His leading to determine who would go with us and who would not.
Are you trusting your own wisdom or are you leaning on God’s as you contemplate big decisions?
