How many of us like to be acknowledged for a job well done? If we’re honest with ourselves, it feels good to be praised when we have completed a task well.

How many of us seek the approval of man for the work we’ve been asked to accomplish? When not sought for, praise can be received as an encouragement and a blessing, even though we sometimes may be uncomfortable with it. But when you seek out the praise of man — what many call “fishing for a compliment” — you make the accomplished task more about yourself and usually make others around you feel uncomfortable.

In Luke 17:7-10, Jesus calls His disciples to a life of faithful servanthood. “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty’” (v. 10). As we remain humble, there should be no need to seek man’s validation.

When we walk in a close relationship with Master Jesus, there is no need to seek man’s approval because we are focused on accomplishing God’s will. We should not need special recognition for consistent devotional times in His Word, prayerful intercession on behalf of others, or sharing the message of Christ to accomplish the Great Commission that He entrusted to us. Our desire should be to please the Lord in all aspects of our lives, and trust Him to bring the necessary encouragement when it is most needed.

We’ve been called as His servants in this world and need to be faithful in just doing what we ought to do.
