“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” — Romans 5:3-4

When I was a little girl, my parents enrolled me in tumbling classes. Supposedly, it was for coordination and balance and socialization, but I thought it was all for my fun and enjoyment. One of the first skills they teach young tumbling students is how to fall. Actually, what they teach is how to fall well, in a way that does not cause injury and allows you to rebound quickly.
This lesson can be valuable since things don’t always go as planned. Sometimes you fall and have to rebound quickly. Sometimes you have time to lay there and feel sorry for yourself and nurse your wounds. But not often.
I’ve found the same can be said for our spiritual life. More often than not, life throws curve balls that threaten the foundation of our faith in God. Jesus warned of this in John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
The key, then, is how we fall — and we all will — as well as how we get up. We need to fall with humility and realize our need for the saving grace of God to help us through. And we need to get up in grace, knowing that each fall makes us ultimately stronger. When our faith is tested, we learn to rely on God more.
