“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” — Matthew 6:24

You run out on the field and try to carry out the assistant coach’s instructions. You listened intently. You understand what he is asking you to do. You execute. A moment later, you hear the head coach yell at you from across the field and ask why you did what you just did. You’re just trying to follow instructions, yet you’re left confused.
Clearly, the coach and player were not on the same page. When we carry out the wishes of someone or something, we submit ourselves to them. We’re looking to satisfy them. Just like each one of us has differing thoughts or opinions on different subjects, the people (coaches) we submit to have different opinions as well. While we may agree on many things, no two people agree on everything.
The same is true for the things we are tempted to submit to. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). On every team there is a head coach everyone is responsible to submit to. Always pleasing our own desires, or someone else’s, while also fully submitting to Jesus is simply impossible. At some point, something’s gotta give.
Is the voice of the One who is truly over everything quieting the other voices that call for your obedience?
