“Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means ‘the Lord is my banner’).” — Exodus 17:15 (NLT)

Banners have long played a significant role throughout history, serving as symbols of identity, unity and purpose. Walk into any large arena, and you’ll likely see championship banners waving from the rafters, representing victory, celebration and commitment. Cheerleaders storm the fields waving their team colors, and winning teams pose for pictures on courts and fields holding championship banners after a hard-fought victory.
In the Old Testament, banners identified Israel’s 12 tribes. Encampments and marches featured each tribe’s flag. The Israelites lifted their banners high so that all could gather and stay together. Moses, in Exodus 17 (above), was the first to proclaim that the Lord is “Jehovah Nissi,” proclaiming the Lord as his banner.
Have you ever really thought about the fact that the Lord is your banner? He is your rallying point if you have accepted Him as your Savior. He is your covering. He flies His banner over you, and you are His.
And what does His banner over you look like? “Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love” (Song of Solomon 2:4). His banner over us is LOVE. God loves us so much that He sent His own Son to die on our behalf.
Believers are united on God’s team, and His banner over us is love. He is a mighty warrior who has never lost a battle, and He never will! His love for us is steadfast, and no one can stop what He is doing.
So let us rejoice in the truth that the banner is already hung and the outcome has been decided. In Jesus Christ we have the ultimate victory and His banner over us is love!
