In some Christian circles, you may hear people say, “Speak those things that are not as though they are.” The idea comes from Romans 4:17, which says in part, “the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.”

Be careful about adopting this thinking as your own. When you look closely at this verse, it is not talking about our ability to drive God to make things happen in our favor according to our personal desires. It’s referring to God’s power! He alone can take nothing from nowhere and make everything everywhere. When He created the world, He literally spoke it into existence! Proverbs 16 tells us we must pursue our hopes and dreams on God’s terms.

It is popular these days to create “vision boards,” which give you a clear, coordinated direction for where you want to go in several areas of your life. They allow you to visualize what goals you want to achieve. Just remember to prayerfully consult the ultimate vision board — God’s Word — before you start!

God’s Word says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit” (Philippians 2:3a). The Lord wants us to be ambitious, just don’t let selfish ambitions drag you away from God’s plans for your life.
