George Strait grew up on a ranch in Texas. His father, John, taught him and his older brother, Buddy, all about riding horses, as well as raising cattle on a 2,000-acre farm. After high school, George and his high school sweetheart, Norma, eloped and he soon joined the Army, serving for four years. In 1973, during his time in service, he tried out for a country band made up of servicemen, and he became the lead singer. Afterward, Strait played and sang in a local band while attending college. Though he went to Nashville several times hoping to get a recording contract, he finally got his big opportunity in 1981. Since that time, people around the world know the name George Strait.

His son, George Harvey “Bubba” Strait Jr., started competing in rodeos while attending Texas A&M University. After college, he became a team roper with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). This young man learned most of what he knows from his father while growing up on the family’s ranch, as his father did before him. Bubba followed in his father’s footsteps in many ways. Junior enjoys everything related to ranching, and he’s a songwriter who has written several famous country songs.

Bubba and his wife, Tamara, have a son, George Harvey Strait III, and a daughter, Jillian Louise Strait. A few years ago, Harvey joined his grandfather on stage in front of 80,000 fans and sang a little bit of the song “God and Country Music.” We now see three generations of singing cowboys.

As we think about our lives, we all have different jobs and responsibilities, but we should always be mindful of making a positive impression on future generations. Most importantly, we can do our part to point children to God and tell of His faithfulness. Just as someone may have shared Bible stories with us, we can pass on these stories to younger generations with their active minds and strong memories. “We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (Psalm 78:4).

Though we want our children and grandchildren to have good health, get an education, enjoy fun activities, and find successful jobs, nothing is more important than knowing who Jesus is and the path to Heaven. “He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children” (Psalm 78:5-6).

Most things in this world only last a short time, but God lasts forever. God wants our children to know that, and has asked that we show them the way.
