“Martha, Martha … you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41-42

When I came to Mississippi State to work as the football chaplain, I quickly realized that with pads and helmets on, all players look alike. When it comes to faith, however, we all live it out and worship so differently. And that’s OK.
It reminds me of a passage in Luke 10 when Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary. I tend to read into the story and imagine what was really going on during these five verses. Martha, being the gracious host she was, wanted to make sure everything was perfect. She wanted to make sure the meal was right, the house was clean, the clothes were folded, and everything was perfect. I believe she did this not because she was self-righteous, but rather because this was an act of her worship.
But when we see Mary in this passage, she’s at the feet of Jesus. So Martha comes to Jesus and asks Him to tell Mary to get up and help, and I’m sure she expected it to happen. But verses 41 and 42 speak volumes, as Jesus said, “Martha, Martha … you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
When we come to Jesus with a heart of worship, there is no mold we must fit ourselves into. Rather, we can come to Jesus just as we are, and express our heart of worship to Him.
