A few years ago, our varsity basketball team made it to the conference championship. It was very exciting — we were going to play in a big college arena. There were local celebrities announcing the game and it was televised on one of the ESPN channels. Walking out onto the court under the bright lights was extremely fun. Our team was filled with hope and enthusiasm. The coaching staff was upbeat and we were all wearing matching game day ties and watches. Our fans, cheerleaders and school community were packed in behind our bench. It was a great day! Sadly, we lost that game. Even though it was just a game, it was very depressing.

My brother-in-law, who is a pastor, once said that a great two-word summary of the Bible is “but God.” What a simple but tremendous truth! Even on a very personal level, “but God” applied to losing a championship basketball game. The phrase “but God” implies intervention, hope, renewal, strength and a second chance. Take a moment to think back on your life at how many “but God” moments you have lived through. I hope there have been many. I hope you can see the connection between your faith and your daily living.

Behind every “but God” is a story. Look at the Biblical stories throughout the Old and New Testaments. The Israelites were cornered in by the Red Sea, “but God” parted the waters. David was facing a giant in a fight, “but God” gave him victory through a slingshot. Many times Paul was faced with tremendous adversity, “but God” saw him through. Jesus Christ died on the cross, “but God” rose Him from the dead. We are condemned sinners who are guilty of falling short over and over in our lives, “but God” demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Yes, my brother-in-law may be right. A simple, two-word summary of the Bible may very well be “but God!”
